Bam! A first-world problem steamrolls you at maximum velocity ! God I miss having header paragraphs visible on Kinja ...
.
.
.
So we’re on the hottest two day stretch of the year, and I’m finding out very quickly that living on a t op floor corner unit with lots of natural lighting h as a big downside. Pretty consistently hitting outdoor temp + 8 degrees feirenheit throughout the day and night.
Let’s set the stage.
My roommate and his girlfriend came back from a camping trip.
Roommate goes off to work, he won’t be back for 8 hours.
Roommate’s girlfriend takes a nap, then leaves.
Roommate’s girlfriend locks the box fan in bedroom.
Roommate’s girlfriend locks the box fan in bedroom.
ROOMMATE’S GIRLFRIEND LOCKS THE BOX FAN IN BEDROOM.
Red. Air-cooled. V4. The world is telling me to get a Ducati.
Success. I also got a celebratory block of cheese, which I will be eating with crackers while situated no more than two away from the fan.

My apartment has shit ventilation and was routinely outside +5-10 like yours. Two box fans with one pulling air in one side of the apartment and one blowing out the other did very little. I caved about a week ago and did this:
Sweet salvation! It can't pull the temp below 80 when it's 90+ outside but it's so much nicer than the 100+ I was getting before.

Yeah to pick a lock like that you need a tensioner and a rake in general. I can come over and do it for you!

Oh man. I’m considering it.
That or build another swamp cooler for the real hot days...

Wait, so do you use the tensioner to make sure that as you pop each pin up they won't come down?

I know you aren’t thinking straight due to the heat, because you posted photos of yourself commiting attempted breaking and entering and tagging as yourself.
Also, I hope you ate the cheese quickly.

I’m with you man. It’s 80 inside the house even with the portable droid unit working hard since 11:00 am.

Um the tumbler lock spins so you put the L shaped tensioner in the bottom slot and hold it under tension. With that tension you rake the pins and they should stay up because of the tension. When the last pin goes up the whole thing should spin as you do with the key.

All I’m saying is I’d bet good money that jail cells in this bougie city are air-conditioned.

Got it. I can see now why my attempt failed :(

There's a storage unit underground here. It's gotta be twenty degrees below outside temp. Strongly considering sleeping down there...

Police Blotter - Man on red motorcycle pulled over carrying a huge fan , “what’s that in your pants, son? ”, “oh, just a huge block of cheese...”

I have the equivalent of a 4 ton ac in my 1000 ft 3 apartment and it’s effing 80f+ in here. I hate this building, leaks energy like a vert with the top down and the solar radiation makes it smoldering hot. Oh and the 14000 btu unit in my kids room has decided to start tripping the breaker so I’m going to have to tear it down and examine it tomorrow. Relegated to fan only for the evening. Fml

My brother in law was informed he’s on indefinite WFH. He has the home office set up in the upstairs bedroom. On the sunny side of the (1920s) house . He told me he’s having an AC system installed in the attic just for the upstairs as the main central isn’t enough up there.

Meanwhile in New Zealand it’s about 50F, hosing with rain, and winds are gusting to 70mph, which is enough to shake my 5th floor apartment . Plus I’m working from home and the acoustics of my office mean I can run the fan heater, or be off mute on conference calls, but not both at the same time. And since today is a Meetings For Africa day, I’m wrapped up like the abominable snowman in what my wife calls my “prison outfit”.

I got my central air replaced last week and it’s blissful. I’d been managing with a window unit but it barely kept the house below 90.

Its so worth it. I've gone from coming home from work and laying in a puddle of sweat on my couch to actually being comfortable and wanting to do stuff when I get home. It's great.

Pretty nice here but supposed to hit high 80’s tomorrow and I have to ride with kids after work.

You live in a humid place without AC, good luck lol. Although I have no idea what the humidity in WA is like, but it must be more than here in Socal! My swamp cooler was $140 from home Depot, seems to do the job pretty well here. It gets my room down below 80 always which I’m content with. A fan on its own doesn’t do shit for the temperature but it does make 90 more palatable. I had considered trying a homemade swamp cooler but that price point and the garden hose hook-up made it an easy sell to me.

Make it comfy. Next week looks to be the same.

My place faces south and has no shade - it can get to 85F or so without issue - this thing is a life saver, I don’t see how people live without one:
Cheap to run, too, my summer power bill is usually under $30.

This is pretty much the only thing I miss about living in the Seattle area “You don’t need A/C it never gets hot enough.” Except when it does every Summer.
Oh wait, I do miss sleep ing with a window open, on the nights when A/C rea lly isn't needed.

Our lack of AC is up there with our cultural disdain for umbrellas.

You considered an 8h ride too right? Right!
It was so nice this evening. Traffic died down, no cops about. Good p lay time.

Life needs more celebratory cheese. I approve of this post.

In all seriousness, your windows won’t allow for a normal window AC unit? The small ones are usually like $60 and work way better than that portable garbage. You don’t have to drill into the frame with sufficient use of tape.

Dude! you need this:
https://www.ctopreviews.com/best-window-tints/
You can find it at most hardware/home repair stores here in US, or online if you can’t find it locally. I had to film all of my East/West facing upstairs windows to make my house livable. Plus it’s good practice for when you decide to wrap your supercar in some thing bold
good luck / stay cool

I’ll give you the same advice I posted to AestheticsI nMotion:

I bought a hyperkewl cooling vest to wear on the bike. Holy shit. It's literally just a vest that holds water really really well. But riding at 90 degrees for an hour and a half in my all black dominator gear and over-the-calf goretex boots felt legitimately cool, like I had my own AC under my jacket. Highly recommend.

I t has been getting hot here in the early evening when what little breeze we had dies and the setting sun just BLASTS in the house. I am very happy we installed forced air and heat. We don’t need them on often, but the difference a few degrees makes keeping you from sweating your calls of after a long day makes it well worth it.
